Fern P. Karsten

Miss Fern P Karsten, 84, of Salem, Oregon, passed away on May 26,
2008. A Memorial services will be held at Ross Hollywood Chapel in
Salem on August 2, 2008 at 2 p.m.
Miss Karsten was born November 30, 1923 in Central Nebraska. She
graduated from Elm Creek High School in 1940.
She moved to Portland from Kearney in 1960 were she lived until
2006. She moved to Salem to be close to family at that time. Her
career was with Wells Fargo Bank in the Fleet Service.
She loved to travel when she was able you could find her at Jazz
Festivals every chance she could go.
She leaves to mourn several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and
nephews.
Fern was proceeded in death by her brothers, Albert, Walter,
Clarence and sisters, Lizzie, Florence, Mabel, Edna and Lilia.
Ross Hollywood Chapel at Salem is in charge of the arrangements.
 

Harold L. Menagh

Harold “Hal” Leroy Menagh, 69, San Jose, California, formerly of
Mascot, Nebraska and Elm Creek, Nebraska died on May 18th, 2008 at
his home in California. Hal was born in Mascot in 1939 to Isabel and
Claude Menagh. He loved cooking and preparing family feasts for the
holidays. He will often be remembered for his unforgettable crème
brulee. Hal loved laughing, joking, enjoying life and being around
people.
Hal graduated from the Kearney Teacher's College (later UNK) to be
an Industrial Arts Teacher in Ocean Shores, Washington. Later he
joined the Department of Defense where he stayed for over 31 years
working in Special Programs until his death.
Hal married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Lee Else, and had a
baby boy, Troy Lynn Menagh, in 1962 who passed in 1965. In 1977 they
adopted a son and named him Trevor Richard.
Sandra passed away in 1993 of lung cancer.
Survivors include: Hal's son, Trevor Richard Menagh, Philadelphia,
PA; brother, Merlin Menagh, Shell Knob, MO; brother-in-law, Richard
“Uncle Dick” Mulholland, Mt Vernon, WA.
Memorial Service will be held at the Elm Creek United Methodist
Church on Saturday, July 5th at 11 am. We will bury the urn of ashes
after in the Elm Creek cemetery afterward.

Floyd Vernon Pierce

Floyd Vernon Pierce, 85, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at his home in Lexington.

 
He was born May 23, 1923, at Overton, Nebraska, to James E. and Alice H. (Musser) Pierce.
 
Floyd lived his entire life in the Overton/Lexington area except for the time he spent in the United States Army.  He was 1942 graduate of Overton High School.  He entered the United States Army on February 17, 1943, and served in the Pacific Theater in the Engineer Battalion.  Floyd was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946. 
 
Floyd was in the construction and excavating business from 1948 to 1962, and worked for 24 years as a Tool & Die Maker at Monroe Auto in Cozad, Nebraska. 
 
He lived his life as a bachelor for 66 years until meeting the love of his life, Ione E. (Spreier) McHale.  The couple was married March 17, 1990, at Lexington, Nebraska. 
 
Floyd had a keen interest in flying, even building his own biplane from scratch and was well known around Lexington for this accomplishment.  He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association for over 40 years.  He also enjoyed riding bicycles with Ione and being with her family who so graciously accepted him with open arms.
 
Floyd was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the Administrative board.  He was also a member of the Lexington Lion’s Club and was instrumental in starting the recycling business with the trailer which later became one of the Lion’s Club’s greatest fundraisers.
 
Survivors include his wife:  Ione E. Pierce of Lexington, Nebraska
 
Stepson:  Max D. McHale of Lincoln, Nebraska
 
Stepdaughter:  Linda K. Guill and Rick Klauz of Lexington, Nebraska
 
Two brothers:  Clarence (Dorothy) Pierce of Ceres, California
                         Glenn (Edna) Pierce of Byhalia, Mississippi
 
Two sisters:  Joy Beatty of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
                     Melva (Floyd) Hughbanks of Smithfield, Nebraska
 
Four grandchildren:  Russell (Lisa) Guill of Lincoln, Nebraska; Kristin (Jonathan) Leahy of Westminster, Colorado; Jennifer (Seth) Felton of Lincoln, Nebraska; David McHale of Lincoln, Nebraska.
 
One great-granddaughter:  Samantha Leahy of Westminster, Colorado
 
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy Pierce; one infant sister; one brother-in-law, Hanford Beatty and one grandson, Ryan Guill.
 
It was Floyd’s wishes his body be cremated. 
 
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington, Nebraska with Reverend John Craig, Reverend Todd Karges and Pastor K.C. BeDunnah officiating. 
 
There will be no Visitation.
 
Inurnment with Military Honors will be at 12:30 p.m. prior to the Memorial Service at Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington, Nebraska.
 
Memorials are suggested to the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department, the Tri-County Hospital Hospice, Columbarium Fund at First United Methodist Church or the Donor’s Choice.

Delores E. Huss

Delores E. Huss, 79, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Friday, June 13, 2008, at her home in Lexington.

 
She was born April 25, 1929, at Stratton, Nebraska, to Alois and Mary Anna (Sramek) Lorens.
 
Delores attended school at Stratton, graduating from Stratton High School with the class of 1947.  Delores taught school for several years and worked in the Commercial National Bank at Stratton.
 
She was united in marriage to Melvin F. Huss on August 22, 1950, at St. John’s Catholic Church at Beardsley, Kansas.
Three children were blessed to this union; Richard, Ronald and Janelle.
 
The couple moved to Lexington in 1956, when Melvin went to work for the Lexington Sale Barn.  The couple later purchased the business and Delores helped in many aspects of the business alongside Melvin.  Always active in her community, Delores was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society, St. Ann’s School Board, Business and Professional Women, the Tri-County Hospital Auxiliary, the Lexington Painting Club and the A.R.T. Club.  She also belonged to the “Birthday Club”.
 
When the children were small, Delores was a Brownie, Cub Scout and 4-H leader.  She dearly enjoyed entertaining her friends on Fillmore Street. Delores was always willing to help others and as a result received the Good Neighbor Award through Ak-Sar-Ben and the Sunshine Award through KOLN/KGIN television.
 
Delores enjoyed painting, cooking and spending time with family and friends.  When she was recovering at Plum Creek Care Center, she was seen as the caretaker, instead of the patient. She was always concerned with others, this was the type of person Delores was. 
 
Survivors include her husband:  Melvin Huss of Lexington, Nebraska
 
Two sons:  Richard (Mary) Huss of Omaha, Nebraska
                   Ronald (Shirley) Huss of Kearney, Nebraska
 
One daughter:  Janelle (Ken, Jr.) VerMaas of Lexington, Nebraska
 
Three sisters:  Mary Lou Vrbas of Culbertson, Nebraska
 
                       Loretta (Roland) Sandberg of Stratton, Nebraska
                       Rose (Jerry) Owens of McCook, Nebraska
 
Eight grandchildren: Dr.  Kenneth VerMaas, III of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Stacy (Jamie) Pfannenstiel of Parker, Colorado; Jennifer (Matthew) Anderson of Papillion, Nebraska; Kimberly (Rusty) Sutton of Lexington, Nebraska; Melissa (Avery) Koon of Augusta, Georgia; Megan Huss of Kansas City, Missouri; Kevin & Joseph Huss of Omaha, Nebraska. 
 
Five great-grandchildren with one on the way.
 
Delores was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Francis and Louis; one sister, Lucille and one great-granddaughter, Silvi.
 
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Reverend Paul Colling officiating.
 
Burial will be in the St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery at Lexington.
 
Visitation will be held Monday, June 16, 2008, from 3-5 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Wake Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington.

Richard H. “Dick” Schulte

Richard H. “Dick” Schulte, 79, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at his home in Lexington surrounded by his loving family.

 
He was born March 4, 1929, at Kearney, Nebraska, to Lloyd and Rosie (Brisbin) Schulte.
 
Dick grew up in the Kearney area and stayed close to home until entering the United States Navy on September 23, 1947, serving in Korea.  He was Honorably Discharged on September 2, 1951. 
 
Dick was united in marriage to Ruby Loar on February 18, 1952, at Broken Bow, Nebraska, five children were blessed to this union; Michael, Joyce, Wanda, Linda and Cindy.
 
The couple made their home in Lexington and Grand Island until moving to Kearney in 1956.  They moved to Thousand Oaks, California for two years, but returned to Nebraska and to Lexington in the late 1970’s, where they have made their home ever since. 
 
Dick’s church and faith were strong influences in his life as well as his family’s lives.  As a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church, he drove bus to mission trips in Louisiana to help following hurricane Katrina as well as several trips to Branson, Missouri. He also drove kids to Kearney, Nebraska to the Royal Kids Camp.  Dick and Ruby loved to motorcycle around the country.  They belonged to the “Retreads Group” a motorcycle club who traveled around the country.  Dick spent his working career driving semi, the past 17 years were spent at Nebraska By-Products.
 
Dick was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW.  He was past president of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship Group, a non-denominational international group. 
 
Although it was well known that his faith was the major part of his life, it was his family that kept him going through thick and thin.  He will be so very missed.

One brother:  Edward Schulte of Ansley, Nebraska
 
Four sisters:  Priscilla Young of Seattle, Washington
                      Karen Eddy of Norfolk, Nebraska
                      Sharon Bellman of Seattle, Washington
                      Cheryl Westwood of Redlands, California
 
Nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren (with one on the way), many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
 
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and David; one sister, Charlotte and one great-granddaughter, Faith.
 
Funeral Services will be Monday, June 16, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Lexington with Pastor Joe Masten officiating.
 
Burial with Military Honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lexington.
 
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 15, 2008, from 2-5 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
